Virat Kohli: Facets which define the supreme rise of star Indian batsman

Real Picture

‘Miracles don’t happen; you have to make your own miracle,’ thus Virat Kohli and others sold India's World Twenty20 dreams in a promotional video. It's a different matter that it failed to come to fruition. But the tag line seems apt for the top-order Indian batsman, who has made it a habit of taking his team out of trouble more often than not.
His unbeaten match-winning knock against a formidable Australian bowling line-up, in a virtual quarter-final clash of the World T20, was one such act. The dynamic cricketer has done this so many times in the past that his fans now expect such performances every time he steps on to the field.
With the help of his sheer hardwork and strong will, the Delhi batsman has taken his game to another level. His miraculous 55* against Pakistan and 82* against Australia and a splendid 89* against eventual champions West Indies in WT20, illustrates how well he reads the game.
It seems as if he has started to meander his aggression in the right direction. His sheer chutzpah and ability to take up the challenge head-on make him a dangerous batsman.
Here are the five factors that make Virat Kohli a superstar in the gentleman’s game.
Conventional style: In the slam-bang version of the game, where most of the batsmen try cheeky shots to score runs at a rapid pace, Kohli has a knack of playing with the straight bat and hitting conventional shots. His ability to find gaps and hit boundaries at will, even when the ball is not coming on to the bat, puts the opposition bowlers and skippers under immense pressure. England’s Joe Root and Kohli are possibly the only two batsmen in contemporary cricket who can snatch the game away even while playing proper copy book shots in the shortest format. Art of finding gaps with ease and playing in the ‘V’ makes their batting look even more beautiful.
Fitness: It is certainly an important part in the life of a sportsperson, but in the Indian cricket team, Kohli is a fitness freak, who religiously hits the gym to strengthen his body. That’s the reason he is one of the best fielders in the Indian team and an outstanding runner between the wickets. His sprints in WT20, especially against Australia and West Indies were a treat to watch. The way he ran between the wickets and put the fielding units under constant pressure shows how fitness can help you push your limits and achieve the target with ease.
Finisher: At a time when many are of the view that an ageing Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s has lost his mojo to finish off the games, run-machine Kohli seems to have taken up the role for the Indian team. His record while chasing has always been exceptional, but the way he has been finishing games of late for Team India has proved that he has taken his game to next level. The big-match player is emerging as a new finisher for his side. Considering the fact that he is not a big hitter of the ball, his ability to pace innings to perfection while chasing – irrespective of the target, big or small – forces the opposition to doff their hats to the stylish cricketer.
Consistency: This is the hallmark of his batting and that’s the reason the 27-year-old has been the mainstay of Indian cricket team for the last half-a-decade or so, in all forms of the game. Even with so many big-hitters and dangerous batsmen in world cricket, Kohli has managed to make a special place for himself. In limited-overs cricket, he has a stupendous average of over 50 (in ODIs & T20Is), with 25 tons and 52 half-centuries. In Test cricket, his average is a shade above 44, with 11 hundreds and 12 fifties under his belt. More than anything else, his stature is growing with every passing match.
New facet of his personality: Kohli is known for his flamboyance and on-field antics, but of late, he has shown a new side of his personality. He praised tainted Pakistani pacer Mohammad Amir openly for his memorable spell against India in the Asia Cup T20. In fact, he then went a step further to gift him a bat ahead of the high-profile cash against the arch-rivals in the WT20. His demeanor has changed significantly over the years. Now one can easily feel the tranquility in his personality, which was missing earlier. He bats more purposefully now, which is certainly a good sign for the future of Indian cricket.
Barring the forgettable England tour, the Delhi-lad has hardly disappointed with the willow. The way he has been batting, he is not just destined to break many cricket records in the near future but to become an icon of young cricketers as well

Barcelona Open: Rafael Nadal, Kei Nishikori enter semi-finals

Barcelona Open: Rafael Nadal, Kei Nishikori enter semi-finals
Barcelona: Rafael Nadal struggled to finish off Fabio Fognini at the Barcelona Open on Friday but eventually quelled one of his most troublesome opponents 6-2 7-6(1) to reach the semi-finals.
The Spaniard, bidding for a ninth title at the claycourt tournament having reclaimed his Monte Carlo crown last week, cruised through the first set against the Italian but he went off the boil in the second.
Fognini, who beat Nadal in the tournament last year and knocked him out of the U.S. Open, hit back with two breaks after trailing 0-2 in the second set and served to send the match into a decider.
Showman Fognini saved three match points from 0-40 at 5-6, one with an outrageous drop shot, before succumbing in the tiebreak.
Left-hander Nadal, eyeing a 10th French Open title next month, will face Andrey Kuznetsov or Philipp Kohlschreiber in the semi-finals.
In the other half Japanese second seed Kei Nishikori, bidding to defend the title, beat Alexandr Dolgopolov in straight sets and will play unpredictable Frenchman Benoit Paire for a place in the final

Arsenal F.C. Not Giving up on Premier League Title, Says Arsene Wenger

London: Arsenal F.C. manager Arsene Wenger vowed that his side will not give up on the Premier League title after closing the gap on leaders Leicester City to eight points. (Arsenal, Manchester City Stroll, Martin Olsson Stuns Newcastle)
Saturday's 4-0 victory over Watford came on the back of a win at Everton before the international break and maintained the pressure on Leicester, who host Southampton on Sunday. (Tottenham Manager Urges His Side to Believe After Title Setback)
Victory also enabled Arsenal to close to within four points of north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who dropped points in a 1-1 draw at Liverpool.
Wenger, whose side have seven games remaining, said: "We want to focus on the way we play and keep the quality very high. Then we'll see where we are. We will fight until the end to have a chance.
"The only way we can achieve that is by playing games with our team quality. That is based on our movement, on our technical ability to play at the highest level and at the highest pace.
"Let's focus on the next game. We know what is needed and what is needed is to keep the quality very high. Next week we go to West Ham. It's always a difficult place to go, so let's prepare for that."
The quality of Arsenal's play as they avenged last month's FA Cup defeat by Watford came after a similarly impressive performance at Everton and raised questions about the inconsistency of Wenger's side.
But the Frenchman maintained that the demands of fighting on three fronts - they also exited the Champions League at Barcelona last month can take its toll on any team.
"The title is never there for the taking. You have to work for it," he said.
"Everybody works for it and you have to respect the teams who have more points than you, and who have not played in as many competitions.
"We played Watford in the FA Cup then went to Barcelona on Wednesday and then to Everton on Saturday. It's not the same (for Leicester).
"People on the outside think it's easy, but you have to earn your points, work well in every game and recently we haven't made the most of the chances we've created. We paid for that."
Iwobi 'completely integrated'
Alexis Sanchez's early goal put Arsenal in charge at the Emirates Stadium before Alex Iwobi marked a fine display with the second. Second-half goals from Hector Bellerin and Theo Walcott completed the win.
Iwobi has now scored in successive games, either side of his competitive debut for Nigeria, and Wenger believes the teenager's emergence reflects the importance that his club place on youth development.
"We have values in our club that are maybe not rated always, but one of them is to give a chance to young people and educate them," he said.
"Every year we bring players out and not many players can say that. I'm happy Alex is one of them. He arrived here at the age of seven or eight. He's completely integrated in the way we want to play football.
"He's worked with us since the start of the season and it shows because when he came in he was used to the way we want to play.
"He's also very mobile and is a midfielder with creativity, but is also a finisher. The quality of his receptions is very good because he gets into good spaces."
Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores warned that his side cannot afford to allow the looming FA Cup semi-final with Crystal Palace to distract them from their bid to confirm Premier League safety."It is important not to confuse the targets," he said.
"The semi of the FA Cup is a real situation we want to live in the future. We have to live in the present and in six days we play against Everton.
"This is our target. If we think about what happens in three weeks, we are making a big, big mistake."source--ndtv

18:58 hrs IST: Earlier in the day, the West Indies women notched up a brilliant win over Australia to register their maiden title triumph in the World T20.
18:50 hrs IST: The Eden Gardens is starting to fill up. Both the teams are coming out for the anthems, or in this case, the team songs.
18:37 hrs IST: Here are the playing XIs for both teams
England (Playing XI): Jason Roy, Alex Hales, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan(c), Jos Buttler(w), Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Chris Jordan, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Liam Plunkett

18:30 hrs IST: Darren Sammy has won 10 tosses in a row. West Indies opt to bowl versus England. That is some feat.
18:28 hrs IST: The leg side is bigger than the off side. There is some patches of green grass and some brown grass. There are some footmarks from the earlier Women's game. The ball will slide on as the game progresses. There might not be much spin on offer.
18:19 hrs IST: In other news, Shahid Afridi has stepped down as captain of the Pakistan team after their disastrous performance in the Asia Cup and World T20. However, he has not retired.
18:17 hrs IST: West Indies are determined, motivated and focused. All because of one factor. Mark Nicholas, a Channel Nine commentator and former England player, said that West Indies are short of brains but have IPL history in their ranks in a column.
18:09 hrs IST: It is the clash between the 'Gayle' storm and the 'Hales' storm. West Indies also hold the advantage over England in World T20s.
West Indies Women Australia 0304
West Indies women clinched their first World T20 title by registering an eight-wicket win over Australia in Kolkata.

© AFP

18:00 hrs IST: However, here is the first news of the day. West Indies women have created history by winning the final against Australia by eight wickets to clinch their maiden title. With the West Indies winning the U-19 World Cup earlier in 2016, the West Indies senior team have a chance to create a hat-trick.
17:55 hrs IST: After a month of Twenty20 International, it has boiled down to this. West Indies, the 2012 champions, meet England, the 2010 champions at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Both England and West Indies have endured a roller-coaster ride in the World T20. England started off with a loss to the West Indies, chased down a record score against South Africa and held their nerve against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka to qualify for the semi-finals. In the semi-final, they put on a clinical display to hammer New Zealand by seven wickets.
For the West Indies, they have been magnificent in this World T20. Their flair and aggression have made them the toast of the World Cup. Barring their slip-up against Afghanistan, they put on a magnificent performance against India to get to the final.

Darren Sammy's Open Challenge
The West Indies skipper is on a mission. The West Indies have been playing focused cricket since the start of the tournament. "People just paint us as money-grabbing cricketers because of our success in T20 cricket but yet they still don't respect us in that format and we get that sometimes from our own board. A lot happened before the tournament started and I think in life I always believe everything happens for a reason. I think the pre-tournament shenanigans brought us really closer together as a team."
The West Indies have used all the distractions to galvanise themselves and they stand on the cusp of their second title. However, they will not be taking England, the 2010 champions, lightly.
England Continue to Surprise
From the depths of despair in the 2015 World Cup, Eoin Morgan's men have engineered a remarkable turnaround in the limited-overs format. They have defied expectations and are in the final of the 2016 World Cup.
The skipper has credited Paul Collingwood, the skipper who led England to their only ICC title triumph, for their turnaround.
"The key component in that has been the mindset of the players and back-room staff, and it's rubbed off on everyone." Jason Roy, who was the Man of the Match during the semi-final against New Zealand has said Morgan leads from the front.
"He's a great captain. He's got a great work ethic. And working under someone like that gives a huge amount of confidence," Roy stated.source-ndtv

T20 Women's World Cup 2016: India Women deserve all accolades

India Women have successfully started their campaign in Twenty20 (T20) Women’s World Cup 2016 with a 72-run win against Bangladesh Women at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on Tuesday. India posted 163 for 5, their highest ever T20I total. Skipper Mithali Raj top-scored with 42, while Vanitha VR, Harmanpreet Kaur and Veda Krishnamurthy also chipping in. Anuja Patil and Poonam Yadav picked two wickets apiece, ensuring India Women sealed their first win in the tournament. India Women have been consistent with their winning streak, starting with big win against Australia Women in T20I series at their own den, and continuing the momentum in T20I series against Sri Lanka Women this time at home soil. The win against Bangladesh Women made it 7 wins in 8 matches for India Women . FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: India Women vs Pakistan Women, Match 7 at Delhi
Despite their success, the women somehow fail to attract the same glamour as their male counterparts. The women’s match was no less intriguing, and featured record-breaking performances; the men’s match, on the other hand, proved to be disastrous, causing disappointment amongst fans. Social media changed tunes almost immediately afterwards: ‘So what if Indian men were not their best, the women made us proud.’
Let us ponder on that statement. Have the Eves already not given enough reasons to make Indians proud?
Mithali Raj or Jhulan Goswami’s achievements have been discussed too often to narrate. For years they have carried the burdens of India Women on their shoulders. But what about others? What about Harmanpreet Kaur, an all-rounder matched by few in the world? Or of teenage prodigy Smriti Mandhana? Or Rajeshwari Gaekwad, their slow left-arm workhorse? READ: India vs Pakistan, Women’s World T20 2016: Likely XI for hosts
When India Women were playing against Sri Lanka Women, the men’s series against Sri Lanka were scheduled alongside, but seldom gained attention.
Tennis stars like Sania Mirza and shuttle queen Saina Nehwal have become household names. Exactly why India Women miss out in respect and mass-craze in the era of showbiz and hype eludes logic. Why, in a cricket-crazy nation, does women’s cricket not command the hype and respect of women’s badminton or tennis?
Ask a layman, and he will probably not be able to name an entire XI of Indian Women; most will not be able to name even five. It is a matter that has been spoken and discussed time and again with Mithali silencing critics by going all-out expressing her views, backing BCCI’s decision to televise matches. READ: ICC World T20 2016 good opportunity to promote women’s cricket in India
One thought things were on the rise during the T20I series in Australia. Unfortunately, the telecasters withdrew the moment the men’s team came back, which meant viewers back in India were denied watching the Women’s ODIs. However, West Indies coach Vasbert Drakes backed the broadcast of Women’s matches on a special video telecast by ICC. This improvement was bought in just at time of International Women’s Day.
However, India Women have got sufficient media coverage following the consistency of their performance. To improve things further, Mithali has expressed her wish for India Women to participate in tournaments like BBL (which does have a women’s version), which may give youngsters like Smriti, Harmanpreet or Veda Krishnamurthy a chance to develop as cricketers and mature very quickly, something India needs at the moment.source-intoday

ICC World Twenty20: Joe Root sounds out warning to West Indies ahead of title clash

Batsman Joe Root feels former champions England carry the confidence of overcoming different challenges during the World Twenty20 as they gear up to face the West Indies in Sunday's final at the Eden Gardens.
"We've found ways of winning games of cricket, which is really important," Root said on Friday ahead of a practice session at the Eden Gardens. "We found ourselves in a number of different situations that we have overcome. It means that whatever happens, we would have been in that situation before. We have experience to go back upon -- ways that we have been successful." (England, West Indies to wear black armbands in memory of Kolkata flyover tragedy victims)
England, looking for a second title to add to their victory in 2010, lost to the West Indies by six wickets in their opening Super 10 game in Mumbai before turning things around with a 230-run chase against South Africa.
On a slower pitch in New Delhi, England won close games batting first against defending champion Sri Lanka and Afghanistan before an impressive seven-wicket win over New Zealand in the first semi-final.
Root said there had been no conscious change in the way they played after the initial setback against 2012 champion West Indies.
"There hasn't been any attitude swing or the way we approach practice," Root said. "But we stayed true to what we believed in as a side and how we want to play our cricket. Everyone's contributed in some way, shape or form, which is always nice going into a final."
Root is England's top scorer in the tournament with 195 runs while Jason Roy (183) and Jos Buttler (155) have also been among the runs.
England's bowling unit has also been effective with pace bowlers Chris Jordan and Ben Stokes taking charge in the end overs with finesse. (Balanced England 'buzzing' for big Eden final)
"The way we've bowled at the death has been outstanding. It's about making sure everyone is doing what he does in practice. Every game has been rocking for us (in the tournament) so hopefully it will be the same" in the final, Root said.
Asked if it was better to face the West Indies rather than pre-tournament favorite India on home soil, Root said the opposition didn't matter.
"If you are going to win the World Cup, you have to be the best throughout the tournament," he added.
Root said the big-hitters from the West Indies could be stopped if runs are dried up since they usually look for boundaries.
Chris Gayle had smashed a 48-ball 100 not out with 11 sixes and five fours to help chase 183 against England while Lendl Simmons got 82 not out in 51 against India in the semifinals with seven fours and five sixes.
"If you get a string of dot balls, you can find ways to keep building them and put them more and more under pressure," Root said.source-intoday

How to Teach Kids to Play Tennis

When teaching kids tennis, start by letting them hit balls with a racquet so they learn the feel.
When teaching kids tennis, start by letting them hit balls with a racquet so they learn the feel.
© 2009 Jupiterimages Corporation
Teaching children is often easier when they have a desire to learn. But for kids to want to learn, the process needs to be fun. Whether you are a tennis coach or just want to pass your love of the game along to your children, it's important you don't begin by bombarding young children with the rules. Instead, start by simply bouncing some balls around.
Take your kids out to the backyard, driveway or park and toss a few tennis balls for them to hit with a racquet. And make sure their racquets are the right size -- a full-size racquet may be too large to handle, especially for young children. Smaller models usually will help children feel comfortable using the racquet. First, demonstrate hitting the ball, and encourage children to play and experiment with tennis equipment on their own

Children can bounce balls off a wall or the pavement, hit balls back and forth with you or even send them across the lawn for the dog to fetch. Ask children to see how many times they can hit the ball without letting it fall or how many times they can bounce a ball with a racquet without letting it get away from them. It doesn't matter what you do, as long as children have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the equipment and develop an interest in the game.
Once kids are excited about tennis, they will be ready to learn basic tennis techniques. This is the time to teach them the difference between forehand and backhand shots, as well as how to serve the ball. You can also begin to dabble in the rules of the game.

Novak Djokovic is the master of Masters

Novak Djokovic is on the cusp of adding convincing proof to the growing argument that he ranks second to no man, now or ever, as a tennis player. With his win at the ATP Masters 1000 at Indian Wells, he equaled Rafael Nadal's leading haul of 27 Masters titles.
Djokovic will now be working on a three-peat that he's already accomplished three times at the Miami Open, which started Wednesday. You probably have just enough time to run out to restock on refreshments before this guy becomes the all-time Masters event champion, at age 28.
Nadal never got enough credit for being master of Masters, and Djokovic is unlikely to break that pattern. In a way it's their own fault. As they and other Grand Slam champs of either gender keep telling us, they play for the Grand Slam titles.
Yet here was Djokovic on Sunday, effusively praising the tournament in his victory speech: "I truly believe that this tournament deserves to be a level higher ... between 1000 and Grand Slam there is nothing." It was less a complaint about the structure of the tour than praise for the overall quality of Indian Wells.
The other Masters might not be in quite the same league as Indian Wells when it comes to some amenities, but they are its equal in the most important way: the caliber of the competition. The Masters concept has become a vital part of the game's foundation.
The quality of the competition at these elite, sub-major events is evidenced by the fact that 49 of the past 53 Masters events have been won by one of tennis' Big Four. Over that same six-year span, 22 of the 25 Grand Slam events went to one of the elite quartet.
One of Djokovic's great attributes is his versatility. He's won every Masters title multiple times except for Cincinnati, where he has yet to win the title. It's ironic, because hard court is his best surface. After he was upset by resurgent Roger Federer in last year's Cincinnati final, Djokovic told the media, "This year I got to the finals, step closer. I'm going to keep going, keep fighting to make the history. It's a great incentive."
After easily dismissing Milos Raonic in Indian Wells on Sunday, Djokovic also put his finger on an important aspect of the Masters Series when he said, "I'm just glad to be able to raise the level of my game as the tournament progresses, and that's something that I have been doing in the last two years, particularly on the big events."
Some of the Masters events are tuneups for majors (Madrid, Cincinnati). Others, like these late-winter U.S. hard-court Masters, are bridge events that enable players to stay sharp between majors. That 49 of 53 stat demonstrates that the players don't exactly look at these events as spring training or glorified, between-the-majors exhibitions.
Besides, 1000 ranking points are a real trove. They accounted for 6,000 of Djokovic's current 16,540 ranking points.
All this is a testament to that least sexy but most valuable quality: consistency. Djokovic is winning like no one since Federer in his heyday. Djokovic hasn't surpassed Federer in the Grand Slam singles title hunt, and he's not close. Federer has 17, Djokovic 11. But Djokovic is building an unprecedented record for versatility and consistency married to spectacular achievement
To put this into baseball terms, with the major league season just around the corner, Djokovic might not end up the home run champ, but he might become the batting average and RBI king. A player with several seasons like that would have a pretty good shot at being called the greatest ballplayer of all time, no?
Federer currently trails Djokovic and Nadal by three Masters titles. He could bag a few more. Nadal, who's been struggling since he was upset at Wimbledon in 2014, hasn't won a Masters 1000 since he took Rome in happier times that same year. Andy Murray, the junior partner in the Big Four, won two Masters last year to boost his total to 11, same as Pete Sampras.
The list of players with anemic Masters records also is telling.
Lleyton Hewitt? A paltry two Masters for his entire career. Stan Wawrinka, Tomas Berdych, and David Ferrer have one each. Marin Cilic, a US Open champion, hasn't won a Masters event. Neither has No. 6 Kei Nishikori, nor No. 10 Richard Gasquet.
Djokovic will try to move into sole possession of first place on the roll of Masters champions over the coming days in Miami. Nadal will be there, trying to stop him. So will Murray. Federer pushed up his return date in order to compete in Key Biscayne.

Timea Bacsinszky's lucky charm this week in Miami? Skiing champ Lara Gut, of course

Timea Bacsinszky talks about her three-set win over Agnieszka Radwanska to reach the quarterfinals at the Miami Open.
It's been a pretty good week for Timea Bacsinszky thus far. On Monday, she defeated world No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska and just 24 hours later she topped No. 5 Simona Halep to advance to the semifinals at the Miami Open.
And through both victories, she had a good luck charm sitting in the stands. No, it wasn't a lucky penny or stuffed animal or anything like that. It was Lara Gut -- the top-ranked Alpine skier in the world and the winner of this year's season-long super-G title. After nabbing the crystal globe, the Swiss star headed to Miami for some downtime and contacted her fellow countrywoman to see if she could attend one of her matches.
According to WTA Insider, Bacsinszky said Gut reached out last week. "She wrote me on Friday like, 'Hey, it would be fun if I could come watch you in Miami,' so I knew she was coming to Miami anyway. It was actually a big thing in Switzerland; no one knew where she was, and I was reading Swiss news headlines that were asking, 'Where Has Lara Gone For Holidays?'"
Gut was initially planning on attending just one session, but as Bacsinszky was playing so well, she decided to keep coming. She was supposed to fly home on Monday but delayed her travels in order to attend Tuesday's quarterfinal match. While she can't be at Thursday's match against Svetlana Kuznetsova with a trip to the finals on the line, she'll obviously be cheering from afar -- and hoping her good luck vibes can cross an ocean

Novak Djokovic Withstands Back Spasms to Reach Miami Open Semifinals

Miami: Defending champion Novak Djokovic withstood back spasms throughout the second set on Wednesday to defeat Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-3 and reach the Miami Open semifinals.
Djokovic, trying to match Andre Agassi's record of six Miami titles with his third in a row, will play Belgian 15th seed David Goffin on Friday for a berth in Sunday's final.
The 28-year-old Serbian won his 14th consecutive match at the hardcourt event and his 28th out of 29, but needed a gritty performance after back pain began early in the second set, prompting him to have massage therapy before serving in the sixth game.
"Due to windy conditions on the court, it was hard to find a good rhythm to serve," Djokovic said. "I had a little bit of a spasm in the back but (the trainer) did a great job and I was able to finish the match."
Asked if he had any worries the spasms might become a long-term issue, Djokovic said: "No concerns. None at all."
Azarenka, Kerber cruise
On the women's side, reigning Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber, the second seed from Germany, and two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka of Belarus advanced to a Thursday semi-final showdown.
Both have finals wins over top-ranked Serena Williams this year, Kerber at the Australian Open and Azarenka at Indian Wells.
Former world number one Azarenka defeated British 24th seed Johanna Konta 6-4, 6-2 while Kerber cruised into the semi-finals, downing US 22nd seed Madison Keys 6-3, 6-2.
The German second seed, the last of the top 12 remaining, is 1-6 lifetime against Azarenka, but won their most recent meeting in the Australian Open quarter-finals on the way to the title.
Eighth-ranked Azarenka, who won the 2009 and 2011 Miami titles, will jump to fifth in the world next week.
Azarenka could become only the third woman to win back-to-back in Miami humidity and Indian Wells desert heat after Steffi Graf in 1994 and 1996 and Kim Clijsters in 2005

Sharapova admits failing dope test, loses plum sponsors

The 28-year-old revealed on Tuesday that she failed a drug test at the Open. The Russian star explained that the drug, Meldonium, which had been prescribed for a pre-existing condition for up to a decade, was added to a banned substance list only on this January 1, and she had "not known".

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned the drug effective January 1. Sharapova, the World No.7, said she didn't notice that the drug was banned by the WADA.

"For 10 years this medicine was not on the banned list, and I had been legally taking it," Sharapova said in Los Angeles.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) said on Tuesday she would be provisionally banned from March 12. The usual ban for first-time offenders is two years.

The failed drug test came on January 26 -- after Sharapova lost to Serena Williams in the quarter-finals -- and she was charged with an anti-doping violation on March 2, the governing body added.

Sportswear giants Nike terminated its long-running sponsorship of Sharapova, and said it was "saddened and surprised" by the news. It had an eight-year USD70 million with Sharapova. The association began when Sharapova was 11 years old.

"We are saddened and surprised by the news about Maria Sharapova," Kejuan Wilkins, a spokesman for Nike, said.

"We have decided to suspend our relationship with Maria while the investigation continues. We will continue to monitor the situation."

Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer joined Nike in cutting its 12-year ties with Sharapova, while car manufacturers Porsche also suspended promotions with her on Tuesday. She is the world's highest-paid female athlete for the 11th year running.

Tennis Australia on Tuesday expressed "surprise" that 2008 Australian Open champion and five-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova failed a drug test during the 2016 Australian Open.

Australia's highest tennis body acknowledged the drug test was failed at its tournament, and said Sharapova was "ready" to face any consequences for her actions.

"We are surprised by today's news that Maria Sharapova tested positive to a banned substance during the Australian Open," a statement read.

"Throughout her career Maria has always impressed with her professionalism as a leader and role model in our sport. In her press conference Maria said she is prepared to face the consequences of what she describes as a 'huge mistake'."

Tennis commentator Renae Stubbs tweeted that she was "shocked" by the news, while current Australian men's player Matthew Ebden was sceptical of Sharapova's reasoning.

"Doesn't look that innocent for Sharapova or whoever else took it, this Meldonium stuff but who knows?" he told social media website Twitter.

Former Grand Slam champion Jennifer Capriati took a similar stance. In a series of tweets that didn't mention Sharapova by name, Capriati said she was "disappointed."

"I had to lose my career and never opted to cheat no matter what," Capriati tweeted.

"I had to throw in the towel and suffer. Im extremely angry and disappointed. I had to lose my career and never opted to cheat no matter what.i had to throw in the towel and suffer."

"I didn't have the high priced team of (doctors) that found a way for me to cheat and get around the system and wait for science to catch up," she added.

The failed drug test could cause the five-time Grand Slam winner a spot at the Rio 2016 Olympics and the USD298,000 she won in January at the Australian Open.

However, not all is willing to vilify Sharapova with the Russian Tennis Federation president Shamil Tarpishchev calling the drug test scandal "nonsense" and said he thinks she will still play at this year's Olympics.

Jo Durie, former No.5, said she doesn't believe Sharapova is a drug cheat.

Novak Djokovic makes peace with Serena Williams, Billie Jean King over equal pay

Florida: Novak Djokovic made peace with Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Serena Williams and others Wednesday, supporting equal prize money for men and women tennis players after days of controversy.
The world number one from Serbia suggested men attract more spectators and deserved better paydays in remarks Sunday after winning the Indian Wells final.
"Stats are showing that we have much more spectators on the men`s tennis matches. I think that`s one of the reasons why maybe we should get awarded more," said Djokovic, who also noted women "have to go through a lot of different things that we don`t have to go through, you know, the hormones and different stuff."
Djokovic issued an apology of sorts on social media Tuesday but refused to back down from his remarks, leaving that for his news conference at the ATP and WTA Miami Open, where he is the top seed and defending champion.
"I never had an issue with equality in gender or sport or other areas of life," Djokovic said. "We all deserve more of the wealth distribution from the tournaments."
The 11-time Grand Slam singles champion added, "I feel very sorry if I hurt my female colleague tennis players. I have a huge respect for all of them."
Djokovic said he had sent messages to Andy Murray, Serena Williams and others who had been critical of his earlier remarks.
"I never had any intention to offend them or come up with any negative connotations in my statement," Djokovic said. "I don`t make any differences between the genders. I am for equality in the sport."
Djokovic spent 30 minutes before talking to reporters speaking with Billie Jean King and Chris Evert about his comments, saying King was not in a fiery mood after her years fighting for gender equity in prize money."She was in a very good mood with me," said Djokovic. "We spoke about opportunities that a tennis player has, to use his influence to make a positive difference in the world. We had a nice and friendly chat."

King and Evert spoke to reporters earlier, generally talking beyond tennis issues about gender equity but saving a few choice words for Djokovic.
"I didn`t quite understand the hormones thing," Evert said. "You don`t talk about women`s hormones. Anywhere."
"He was talking about our monthly situation," King said. "Like it was the dark ages."
Evert cited cultural differences between Djokovic growing up in Europe and Americans embracing equality for women as a principle in a different time frame.
"I think a lot of the comments are cultural," Evert said. "I don`t hear that too much from the American men`s tennis players.
"I just think America was the first country. The Europeans took the cue from America. Americans respected equality in a lot of life levels earlier than Europe did."
King noted Djokovic has had a young son recently and said that and culture could play a role in his remarks.
"My prayer is that most of the guys have daughters," King said. "I think it changes them."
Djokovic, who again will try to complete a career Grand Slam at the French Open, said he was shocked at the magnitude of outrage his comments caused.
"I was a little bit surprised with what kind of proportions and directions this story got in the media the past few days," Djokovic said.
"There were no bad intentions. People probably understood it the wrong way. The outreach of this story was tremendous."
