Saina Nehwal Seals Semifinal Spot, PV Sindhu Crashes Out of Indian Open Super Series

New Delhi: Defending champion Saina Nehwal upstaged Korea's Sung Ji Hyun to reach the semifinals but it was curtains for P V Sindhu in the women's singles of the India Open Super Series in New Delhi. (Read More in Badminton)
The Olympic bronze medallist Saina defeated World No. 8 Sung 19-21, 21-14, 21-19 in a women's singles match that lasted for an hour and 23 minutes at the Siri Fort stadium. The Indian will next take on Olympic champion Chinese Li Xuerui, seeded third, who saw off compatriot Wang Shixian 22-20, 12-21, 21-17 in another quarterfinal match.
However, two-time bronze medallist at World Championship Sindhu squandered a one-game lead to go down 21-15, 15-21, 15-21 against another Korean Bae Yeon Ju in another quarterfinals here. This was Sindhu's third loss to the Korean.
In a game of energy-sapping rallies sprinkled with drops and half smashes, it was Saina who emerged victories after Sung committed a series of unforced errors after being tied 17-17 in the decider.
There was hardly any winners scored as Saina too made a lot of unforced errors and wrong line judgements to lose points galore. The Indian's movements at the forecourt on the right side seemed affected by her nagging ankle injury as she failed to retrieve a lot of points in that area.
After the match, Saina said she didn't expect it to be such a tough match as she always had easy outings against Sung.
"She has played really well. I didn't expect her to do so many rallies actually. she was picking up my shots. The last moments were actually very tense. It has always been easy against her. It was never such a long match. Once I think in Denmark I guess we played close. This time it was totally different. But I guess there is lot of pressure also now on me. I am happy with the way I played," she told reporters.
"From quarters it will be tougher. She is in great shape. She won the New Zealand Open also. It was a tough match. I was not getting points on smashes, so it was either on rallies or drops, so I was sticking with it. She has got some very good drop and she is tall as well.
Saina, who has beaten Sung five times in the past six meetings, used her drops early on to catch the Korean at the forecourt. However, unforced errors and a few deceptive returns helped Sung to lead 8-4. The Indian showed her resilience to claw back at 10 before a shot from Sung left her stranded.
After the break, Saina turned the tables to lead 14-12 but soon Sung once again drew parity. The Indian managed to nose ahead to 17-15 but once again Sung fought back and grabbed a 18-17 lead after Saina made a wrong line call and then hit the net.
Another return from the Indian going to net and then her failure to retrieve a shot on her forehand gave Sung a 20-17 lead. Saina saved two but then made a wrong line call to gift the first game to her opponent.
In the second game, Saina led 3-1 when Sung took a medical time out to attend to her right ankle. When the match resumed, Saina continued her good run to lead 6-2. Sung drew level at 6-6 when a low return from Saina went to the net. However, the Indian again surged ahead and entered the break at 11-7.
After the interval, Saina extended the lead to 13-8 and then zoomed to 19-10 with the Korean crumbling. Sung grabbed three points before her another long shot gave Saina a 20-13 lead. The Korean saved one but Saina roared into contest when Sung erred at the net.
In the decider, Sung led 5-2 early on but failed to rein in her unforced errors as Saina soon turned it around at 8-6. The Korean seemed tired as she didn't even try to retrieve some of the shots as Saina reached the break with a 11-7 advantage.
However, after a change of side, Sung reeled off six straight points to grab the lead 13-11. A net error broke the rhythm but Saina again hit wide as Sung lead 14-12. Two wide shots from Sung brought Saina to an even-knell at 17-17.
She grabbed the lead when the Korean erred at the net. A couple of long shots again from Sung took Saina to a 20-19 lead. Sung saved one but Saina sealed it with a midcourt smash and threw up her arms in celebration.

Sindhu disappoints
In another women's singles quarterfinal, Sindhu dished out a compact game as she lead 11-6 at the break and continued her good run after the break. Eventually, Bae hit the net to give a 20-13 lead to Sindhu. After conceding two points, the Indian sealed it with a smash.
In the second game, Bae opened up an 11-8 lead at the interval and reeled off five straight points to reach 16-8. However, Sindhu slowly reduced the margin to 13-19 but another long shot gave Bae a 20-14 lead. The Indian saved one game point before she hit wide again to help the Korean make a comeback.
After lagging behind 3-5, Sindhu managed to grab the lead at 6-5 with a few stiff smashes and some superb returns. But Bae still managed to have her nose ahead at 11-7 at the interval.
At 7-13, Sindhu changed her racquet but it didn't change her fate much as even though she tried to narrow the gap to 13-16, the Indian made some errors at crucial juncture to fall behind. Soon Bae was leading 20-14 when another Sindhu's smash ended up at the net. The Indian saved one but again hit wide to end her campaign here.
Bae will now take on former All England champion Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon, who beat Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying, eight seeded, 12-21, 21-14, 22-20.source-.ndtv

Tiger Woods to Skip Masters Due to Back Surgery

Miami: Former World No.1 Tiger Woods confirmed on Friday that he will not participate in next week's 80th Masters, saying his rehabilitation from back surgery has not progressed far enough to allow him to compete. (Tiger Woods Uncertain Of Return As Masters Tournament Looms)
The 14-time Major champion, a four-time Masters winner, has not played a PGA event since last August. Since then, he underwent back surgery and a follow-up procedure to ease discomfort from a pinched nerve. (Tiger Woods Confident Of Winning More Majors On His Comeback)
"I've been dedicated to my rehab and improving daily, but I'm not physically ready to compete in the Masters," Woods tweeted.
The Masters will be played in Augusta from April 7 to 10.
There had been a bit of mystery about Woods' status for the year's first major tournament, as Woods had not updated the status of his rehabilitation for several weeks. He had said there was no timetable for his return.
"After assessing the present condition of my back, and consulting with my medical team, I've decided it's prudent to miss this year's Masters. I've been hitting balls and training daily, but I'm not physically ready. I've said all along that this time I need to be cautious and do what's best for my long-term health and career," Woods said in a posting on his website.
"Unfortunately, playing Augusta next week wouldn't be the right decision. I'm absolutely making progress, and I'm really happy with how far I've come, but I still have no timetable to return to competitive golf."
Woods said he will go to Augusta National for the annual Champions Dinner where reigning champion Jordan Spieth plans a special Texas barbecue offering, but offered his disappointment to Augusta National and ticket holders that he would not be playing.
"It's a very important and special week to me and it's upsetting to miss it. I do plan to attend the Champions Dinner and see a lot of old friends," Woods said.
Woods also thanked supporters for sticking by him through his physical ailments. Woods has not won a Major since the 2008 US Open and has not captured any title at all since the 2013 WGC Bridgestone Invitational, his 79th PGA triumph -- three shy of matching Sam Snead's all-time record.
"I'd like to thank the fans for their concern and support. The last few years have been difficult, but I have the best fans anywhere, and I want them to know that," Woods said.Woods remains for Major wins shy of the record 18 won by Jack Nicklaus, who will serve as honorary starter when the Masters tees off on Thursday.source-ndtv

India Women have successfully started their campaign in Twenty20 (T20) Women’s World Cup 2016 with a 72-run win against Bangladesh Women at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on Tuesday. India posted 163 for 5, their highest ever T20I total. Skipper Mithali Raj top-scored with 42, while Vanitha VR, Harmanpreet Kaur and Veda Krishnamurthy also chipping in. Anuja Patil and Poonam Yadav picked two wickets apiece, ensuring India Women sealed their first win in the tournament. India Women have been consistent with their winning streak, starting with big win against Australia Women in T20I series at their own den, and continuing the momentum in T20I series against Sri Lanka Women this time at home soil. The win against Bangladesh Women made it 7 wins in 8 matches for India Women . FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: India Women vs Pakistan Women, Match 7 at Delhi
Despite their success, the women somehow fail to attract the same glamour as their male counterparts. The women’s match was no less intriguing, and featured record-breaking performances; the men’s match, on the other hand, proved to be disastrous, causing disappointment amongst fans. Social media changed tunes almost immediately afterwards: ‘So what if Indian men were not their best, the women made us proud.’
Let us ponder on that statement. Have the Eves already not given enough reasons to make Indians proud?
Mithali Raj or Jhulan Goswami’s achievements have been discussed too often to narrate. For years they have carried the burdens of India Women on their shoulders. But what about others? What about Harmanpreet Kaur, an all-rounder matched by few in the world? Or of teenage prodigy Smriti Mandhana? Or Rajeshwari Gaekwad, their slow left-arm workhorse? READ: India vs Pakistan, Women’s World T20 2016: Likely XI for hosts
When India Women were playing against Sri Lanka Women, the men’s series against Sri Lanka were scheduled alongside, but seldom gained attention.
Tennis stars like Sania Mirza and shuttle queen Saina Nehwal have become household names. Exactly why India Women miss out in respect and mass-craze in the era of showbiz and hype eludes logic. Why, in a cricket-crazy nation, does women’s cricket not command the hype and respect of women’s badminton or tennis?
Ask a layman, and he will probably not be able to name an entire XI of Indian Women; most will not be able to name even five. It is a matter that has been spoken and discussed time and again with Mithali silencing critics by going all-out expressing her views, backing BCCI’s decision to televise matches. READ: ICC World T20 2016 good opportunity to promote women’s cricket in India
One thought things were on the rise during the T20I series in Australia. Unfortunately, the telecasters withdrew the moment the men’s team came back, which meant viewers back in India were denied watching the Women’s ODIs. However, West Indies coach Vasbert Drakes backed the broadcast of Women’s matches on a special video telecast by ICC. This improvement was bought in just at time of International Women’s Day.
However, India Women have got sufficient media coverage following the consistency of their performance. To improve things further, Mithali has expressed her wish for India Women to participate in tournaments like BBL (which does have a women’s version), which may give youngsters like Smriti, Harmanpreet or Veda Krishnamurthy a chance to develop as cricketers and mature very quickly, something India needs at the moment.source-intoday

Tiger Woods says 'not physically ready' to play in Masters

Tiger Woods will miss the Masters for only the second time since his tournament debut in 1995, saying he is "not physically ready" for the year's opening major next week.
The former world number one has been sidelined from competition since August as he continues his recovery from back surgeries, and was never likely to tee it up at Augusta National for the April 7-10 event.
"After assessing the present condition of my back, and consulting with my medical team, I've decided it's prudent to miss this year's Masters," Woods said in a statement on his official website (www.tigerwoods.com).
"I've been hitting balls and training daily, but I'm not physically ready. I've said all along that this time I need to be cautious and do what's best for my long-term health and career.
"Unfortunately, playing Augusta next week wouldn't be the right decision," said Woods, a four-times Masters champion.
Now aged 40, Woods has not won a major title since he clinched the 14th of his career at the 2008 U.S. Open and his form has slipped dramatically in recent years due to injuries and the mastering of a new swing.
A tie for 10th at the PGA Tour's Wyndham Championship in August, following a dismal season in which he missed three cuts in the majors, gave him encouragement before his health again intervened.
Three weeks later, he had a second microdiscectomy surgery to alleviate pressure on a disc in his lower back, before needing another procedure on Oct. 28 on the same area due to discomfort.
He has since been recuperating and in late February he posted a video of himself swinging a golf club in an effort to shoot down reports that suggested he had endured setbacks during his rehabilitation.
"I'm absolutely making progress, and I'm really happy with how far I've come, but I still have no timetable to return to competitive golf," said Woods, who won the Masters in 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2005.
He missed the event for the first time in 2014 after undergoing a microdiscectomy.
"I'd like to express my disappointment to (Masters chairman) Billy Payne, the Augusta National membership, staff, volunteers and patrons that I won't be competing," said Woods.
"It's a very important and special week to me, and it's upsetting to miss it. I do plan to attend the (Wednesday) Champions Dinner and see a lot of old friends.source--intoday
